What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
CBT is a technique where individuals are taught skills that involve identifying thoughts, modifying beliefs and changing behaviors. For over 50 years, CBT has been the treatment of choice for changing thinking (cognition) and behavior.
Statistics show that even if weight loss is accomplished, most people gain their weight back and more after the first year. Here at Shane Diet & Fitness Resorts, we want the lifestyle change and healthy eating habits you learn at our weight loss camps for women and men to be maintained for a lifetime. CBT can help accomplish that goal.
Cost and Insurance Reimbursement
This is an optional program offered in addition to the Behavior Change Coaching provided for all guests and included in the Shane Program.
For those choosing to participate, there is a fee of $75 per week. A bill for therapeutic services will be issued and all paperwork and processing will be handled by a third party billing service.
Depending on your insurance company, the type of coverage you have and the length of your stay, you could receive several hundred to more than one thousand dollars in reimbursement, less a 10% administrative fee from the billing service.
The Benefits of CBT
CBT helps guests achieve successful long-term weight management by helping them overcome common thinking errors that serve as barriers to weight control. An example is “exaggerated thinking,” which is what we do when we make the situation greater or worse than it already is. The thought may be experienced as “I can’t stand this craving” or “This is too hard for me, I might as well give up.” Through CBT guests learn to:
- Become aware of such thinking errors.
- Develop healthful responses to such thoughts and others.
- Counter those thoughts by statements such as: “It is effort I need to put into this goal but it is not hard every minute of every day, I will successfully get through it,” or “I can stand this craving by distracting myself.”
- Identify their personal triggers and thoughts connected to their eating behaviors
How We Apply CBT Techniques:
“Self-monitoring” means recording, in a journal, what we eat and drink and any exercise we do, along with our thoughts and feelings. Self-monitoring is crucial. Recording our actions gives us the opportunity to think before we act. It helps us become more aware of patterns, focus on our goals and to look back and see how things have changed over time.
2. Stress Management
We learn stress management skills to help cope more effectively with daily hassles instead of eating when we are upset. Stress management skills include relaxation and breathing exercises, strategies for putting upsetting events in perspective and avoiding the tendency to be self-critical. We also teach problem solving, effective communication and developing improved self-esteem.
3. Identify Specific Strategies for Healthy Eating and Exercises
We learn techniques such as restricting what we eat, what we should and shouldn’t do while we eat and how to slow down the pace at which we eat.
How Is The Program Structured?
Our CBT program is not traditional psychotherapy. It offers engaging, task-oriented learning and group exercises. In addition to participating in the same group Behavior Coaching sessions as all guests, the CBT sessions at Shane Diet & Fitness Resorts include:
- A private personal assessment upon beginning the program.
- Weekly 1-on-1 private sessions with the CBT Coach.
- Behavior Coaching Program Group sessions conducted three times a week.
- A personal review by our CBT coach at the beginning of each 1-on-1 session of CBT assigned exercises and self-monitoring progress (i.e. identifying their triggers, cravings, hunger and maintaining a food diary).
- Discussion of a CBT/weight management topics such as rationalizations and coping.
- Reading and writing assignments that reflect and integrate the learning from the prior session.
- Individualized goal setting and behavioral adaptations for long-term success.
How Does CBT Differ from the Behavior Coaching Included
in the Shane Program?
CBT participation is ideal for guests wanting to explore their behavior and implement changes through one-on-one private sessions and a deeper personal therapeutic analysis. CBT sessions and group Behavior Coaching sessions overlap and guests not choosing CBT will still receive the same highly effective Behavior Coaching sessions Shane is known for.
CBT Expert – Dr. Michelle Maidenberg
Shane Diet & Fitness Resorts’ CBT Program is designed and supervised by CBT expert Dr. Michelle Maidenberg.
Michelle P. Maidenberg, Ph.D., MPH, LCSW-R, CGP directs the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy program at Camp Shane and Shane Diet & Fitness Resorts. She is the President/Clinical Director of Westchester Group Works, a Center for Group Therapy in Harrison, NY where she provides treatment to children, adolescents, teens and adults, and she also maintains a private practice.
Dr. Maidenberg teaches Cognitive Behavioral Therapy graduate courses at New York University and she is a consultant at Fordham University, training practitioners to work with families.
She is also the President and Cofounder of “Thru My Eyes”, a nonprofit 501c3 organization that offers free clinically-guided videotaping to chronically medically ill individuals who want to leave video legacies for their children and loved ones.
Dr. Maidenberg has written articles that have appeared in The New York Times, Fitness, Shape, The Daily News, Health and Ladies Home Journal.
